God Full of Wonder
by Shana Schutte
Sometimes as I drive over a hill in beautiful Colorado Springs, CO. where I live, and gaze upward to where the Rocky Mountains kiss the sky, I am in awe of God's creation. Other days, life's pressures overshadow the mountains and I don't notice the jagged peaks gracing the city.
Author and speaker Beth Moore says that the longer we walk with Christ, experiencing wonder should be a natural part of falling deeper in love with Jesus. However, I think you'd agree that there are times when we all fail to wonder at God, just like I fail to marvel at the majesty of the Rockies.
In his book, Reflections for Ragamuffins, Brennan Manning writes, "There is a beauty and enchantment about the Nazarene that draw me irresistibly to follow Him."
If I never see Jesus as beautiful and enchanting, if I am bored by His name, unexcited by His glory, joyless about His joy, then I have not truly experienced Him and my spiritual eyesight is dim.
Throughout Scripture, God is repeatedly described as wonderful or, as I like to say, "full of wonder." In 2 Samuel 1:26 God's love is described as wonderful; 1 Chronicles 16:9 says that His acts are described the same; Job 42:3 says that God possesses some things that are too wonderful to know; and Isaiah 9:6 describes Him as a wonderful Counselor.
To stand in awe about God's attributes, I must take the time to gaze upon them with my spiritual eyes, just like I must gaze at the Rockies to appreciate them. To simply cast a glance at God's attributes will not make me marvel at them. I must take time to consider them, ponder them, and soak in His goodness. When I do, my spiritual eyesight improves and my perception of God's greatness grows.
"Therefore once more I will astound these people with wonder upon wonder..." Isaiah 29:14 (NIV)
