God Will Remember You
by Shana Schutte
In 1989, I had the privilege of visiting Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire, England. While there, I traveled to Holy Trinity Church, where the great writer Shakespeare is buried. I was impressed with the writer's baptismal book inscribed with the signatures of his parents, and his grave that was strategically placed inside the church chancel.
But the thing that struck me most had nothing to do with Shakespeare, poetry or sonnets.
As I circled the tiny church outside and studied many small headstones, I couldn't believe they were so old! Many from the 1400s were so weatherworn that I couldn't read them; only a letter here or there could be deciphered. Then a thought struck me: Unless you're famous like Shakespeare, only a few generations have to pass and no one knows your name, why you were here or who you were.
Something inside me felt small and insignificant and at the same time, I was amazed and thankful that although others left behind on earth may not remember me after I'm gone, that God knows me intimately--and always will.
Isn't that what we desperately want--to be thoroughly known and loved forever? Isn't it comforting to consider that when the accolades of your accomplishments have faded and your trophies of earthly praise have disappeared, that God will remember you and all you've done for Him?
Even now we have the blessed privilege of being reminded on a daily basis when we spend time on our knees, that we are known and that we matter. Communion with Christ confirms that we have a home in the heart of God that will never disappear. When He whispers His secrets into our spirits, we become more convinced that we are Christ's--and that is something that no amount of time can erase.
"But your are our Father, though Abraham does not know us or Israel acknowledge us; you, O Lord, are our Father, our Redeemer from of old is your name." Isaiah 63:16 (NIV)
